Jill Scott's mother Joyce Scott gave birth to Jill on the 4th of April, 1972 in Philadelphia Pennsylvania. Jill Scott was raised by both her grandmother and mother. She is an only-child. Scott completed her studies at the Philadelphia High School for Girls. She then enrolled at Temple University. Scott was a student in secondary school and also worked at two different job. She hoped to be an high school English teacher. However, her dream ended up being a short-lived dream when she quit college after three year of studying and becoming a teacher's assistant. She began her career by doing live performances of poems as well as her own work. In the end, she teamed up together with Amir Quest Thompson, a member of The Roots. You Got Me is the product of their partnership. In Roots performance, she revealed herself to be an artist. Then, she began collaborating with musicians like Eric Benet Will Smith or Common. In the Canada tour of the Broadway musical Rent the Musical, she gained valuable experience performing. She was signed by Hidden Beach Recordings as their first signing artist.
